OpenTelemetry Net::HTTP Instrumentation

The OpenTelemetry Net::HTTP Ruby gem is a community maintained instrumentation for Net::HTTP.

How do I get started?

Install the gem using:

gem install opentelemetry-instrumentation-net_http

Or, if you use bundler, include opentelemetry-instrumentation-net_http in your Gemfile.

Usage

To install the instrumentation, call use with the name of the instrumentation.

OpenTelemetry::SDK.configure do |c|
  c.use 'OpenTelemetry::Instrumentation::Net::HTTP'
end

Alternatively, you can also call use_all to install all the available instrumentation.

OpenTelemetry::SDK.configure do |c|
  c.use_all
end

Example

An example of usage can be seen in example/net_http.rb.

HTTP semantic convention stability

This instrumentation by default emits the stable HTTP semantic conventions. The OTEL_SEMCONV_STABILITY_OPT_IN environment variable can be used to opt-in to the old or duplicate (both old and stable) semantic conventions.

When setting the value for OTEL_SEMCONV_STABILITY_OPT_IN, you can specify which conventions you wish to adopt:

• http - Emits the stable HTTP and networking conventions.
• http/dup - DEPRECATED: Will be removed on April 15, 2026. Emits both the old and stable HTTP and networking conventions.
• old - DEPRECATED: Will be removed on April 15, 2026. Emits the old HTTP and networking conventions.
